The Ground Insert Base goes 11 inches into the ground has a 4 inch tube and will show only a flat 5 x 5 inch disk when not in use. Deck Mount Plates will work on wooden decks as well as concrete patios. Both will be 3/4 inches high and 9 inches in diameter. Installing on wood will require a drill with a 1/4 inch drill bit lag screws washers and a ratchet with 1/2 inch socket. Installing on concrete will require a hammer drill with a 1/2 inch concrete bit 4 concrete spread anchors 4 mounting bolts with washers and a ratchet with 1/2 inch socket. The freestanding base requires 400lbs of stabilization which can be accomplished with 8 20-inch square patio blocks or by weighting the free planter kit included with this set (a $65 value!).
