Though smaller than the 707 or the DC-8 the Convair 990 was slightly faster than both in cruise. This plane was a stretched variant of the earlier 880 and provided additional passenger seating as a result. A noted feature of this aircraft included bulges on the wings that reduced the drag and increased speed. This model's marketing niche was eventually destroyed by the Boeing 727 and the line was shut down in 1963.
