E-3A Sentry AWACS
The E-3 Sentry designed from the ubiquitous Boeing 707 is the prime American airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft. Its distinctive radar disk located over the rear fuselage makes the E-3 instantly recognizable. The Sentries have served since 1977 primarily in the U.S Air Force though NATO and three other countries utilize the E-3. The largest use of E-3s was during Operation Desert Storm when E-3 equipped units had aircraft in the sky for 24 hours a day maintaining a continuous radar screen over Iraq to shield American forces.
