The dive-bomber was an American invention but the Germans seized the concept since it offered the ability to destroy point targets such as bridges in the enemy rear. During the early years of World War II the damage the Stuka caused was severe but the terror it inflicted was devastating. It would appear without warning in a screaming dive pointed straight down at its prey. As it dove the only sounds worse than the roar of wing guns and of exploding bombs were the loud eerie wail of its wing sirens and the sudden silence that followed its disappearance.
