The RQ-4 Global Hawk is one of the first aircraft specifically designed without the need for a human pilot that has entered general production. A groundbreaking unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) the Global Hawk is a jet powered surveillance craft that can operate entirely on its own or be flown by remote. It is the first unmanned craft that is legally allowed by the FAA to register its own flight plans and operate in civilian airspace. Global Hawks are being used operationally in military squadrons and although they have had some accidents and maintenance issues their ability to stay on station much longer than manned aircraft is valued by commanders.
