The SBD Dauntless was the first and most famous of the Navy's dive bombers. The Dauntless was the standard ship-borne dive bomber of the US Navy from mid-1940 until November 1943. Over 5000 were built to fight successfully in air battles during the early part of the World War II especially in the Battle of Midway in June 1942 when it sank two enemy aircraft carriers.
