Assuming the known height of the landmark is in feet the result is the range expressed in thousands of feet. Example: A lighthouse is known to be 150 feet high and appears to be 15 points on the vertical scale of the reticle. 150 x 15 = 10 so the distance to the lighthouse is 10000 feet.
