The twin bunkie board is needed in order for your bed to function properly. A Bunkie board is simply the foundation for a bunk bed much like a box spring is to a traditional bed though the Bunkie is considerably thinner. Both serve the function of providing support. A Bunkie board is a thin platform that fits inside the bed frame to support the mattress. Otherwise the mattress can sink in the middle and lose shape and integrity. Sometimes the Bunkie board is optional instead of included because some purchasers choose to make their own or use one from a bunk bed that they owned in the past. They vary from the most basic wood panels to Bunkie boards that are padded and upholstered for design and added comfort.
