It is impossible to overstate the importance of the A-5M carrier-borne fighter in the development of Japanese industry and Japanese military capabilities in the mid-1930s. Japan's first carrier borne monoplane fighter it was also comparable in terms of performance and capabilities with the best of its western equivalents. In total it is estimated that nearly 1000 A-5Ms were built the aircraft proving very popular with naval pilots.
