Nicknamed the Crimson Test Tube due to its initial red paint scheme this experimental aircraft featured straight wings and was significant in that it took off and landed on its own power. The D-558 went on to set several speed records though it was quickly overshadowed by the Chuck Yeager rocket plane. Later versions were painted white for better tracking and photography.
