The dark chessmen are made from solid ebony wood a rare dense strong and heavy hardwood that is difficult to carve therefore only entrusted to the hands of master carvers. Ebony wood varies in color from red to black with a rich variety of dark shades. The light chessmen are made from boxwood a fine-grained hardwood with an ivory appearance and a natural luster.
