What We Like About This Fireplace Mantel The ends of this carved butternut shelf are chiseled to a dull point and un-sanded for a rugged log-cabin look. The top is smooth-cut for a natural appearance. Butternut wood is closely related to American Black Walnut but with a coarser grain and lighter more golden color. The accent of the natural bark and the veins and swirls of the butternut wood will add beauty to your hearth.
