Handmade of wood with over 600 joints the craftsmanship of this model is stellar. Nearly as big as the Titanic this German airship was the ultimate in travel. Before the growth of commercial airlines this graceful dirigible known as the Hindenburg flew over 2600 people across the Atlantic from Germany to Rio and New York. It stretched 776 feet form tip to tail and had a top speed of 80 mph cutting the time of a trans-Atlantic trip by two-thirds. In a span of 37 seconds its glory was reduced to ashes in a fiery crash at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey on May 6 1937. At the time The Germans led the world in the technology of dirigibles and the Hindenburg was its showpiece. Due to their massive size these airships needed to be filled with volatile hydrogen because helium would not give enough lift.
