A versatile helicopter the Sikorsky Skycrane was used extensively in Vietnam by the US forces for transport and downed aircraft retrieval. The skeletal fuselage allowed the use of an external cargo module or cranes for lifting but it could not provide both transport and crane capabilities at the same time. This helicopter remained in National Guard service until the early 1990s.
