The flying boat is a type of aircraft specifically designed to take off and land in water and the PBY Catalina is arguably the most successful of the type. Introduced into American service in 1936 the Catalina has seen a variety of combat and non-combat roles in the employ of multiple nations. During World War II Catalinas operated as submarine hunters convoy escorts and light bombers. They performed reconnaissance missions rescued downed pilots and sailors and transported supplies to islands without an airstrip. The aircraft continues to see use in modern times as an aerial firefighter. Hardwood construction and a precision finish make this an excellent item for any enthusiast or collector.
