Used to study the effects of a semi-tailless flight at mach speeds the X-4 was designed as a twin jet single seat experimental craft. It was hoped that the elimination of the horizontal tail would increase stability. In the end this aircraft proved that this was not the case at the time and saved designers from this dead end until fly by wire systems could be engineered.
